Russian River Valley
Cooler, foggier, and more spread out than Dry Creek. This is the valley for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and travelers who care about what is in the glass.
Russian River Valley wraps around the south and west of Healdsburg, where morning fog rolls in off the coast and keeps the vineyards cool. That fog is the whole point: it lets Pinot Noir and Chardonnay ripen slowly, which is why this is one of California's benchmark regions for both. The tradeoff for first-timers is that it is bigger and more dispersed than Dry Creek, with more appointment-only rooms and more driving between them. Plan a slower day and book ahead.
What to taste
Pinot Noir is the star, ranging from bright and red-fruited to deep and savory depending on the site. Chardonnay is the co-lead, and the best of it here is restrained and mineral rather than buttery. A few producers also do excellent Zinfandel and Syrah on the warmer eastern edge.
The drive
Westside Road is the spine of the wine experience, a winding river road southwest of town lined with respected estates. It is gorgeous and slow, so do not pack the schedule. Two appointments plus a picnic is a full, satisfying day. This is the valley where a hired driver pays off most, because the roads demand attention you would rather spend on the wine.
Wineries we send people to
J. Rochioli Vineyards
Pinot puristsAn old-school family estate on Westside Road farming the same ground since the 1930s, and one of the addresses that made Russian River Pinot famous. The estate flight is the move. Hospitality is warm and the views over the home vineyard are the picture you came for. Reserve ahead.
Gary Farrell Winery
Single-vineyard tastingA hilltop room with a sweeping view and a lineup of single-vineyard Pinots and Chardonnays that reward paying attention. A more guided, sit-down experience that suits travelers who want to taste seriously. Appointment only.
MacRostie Estate House
The view & a glassA modern glass-walled tasting house with a long terrace over the vineyards, a few miles south of town. The wines are excellent and the setting does a lot of work. The easiest Russian River stop to relax at without feeling like you are in a seminar.
Rochioli neighbors on Westside
Building a routeWestside Road strings together a run of strong producers within minutes of each other, so once you have one anchor appointment it is easy to add a second nearby. Ask whichever winery you book first who they would send you to next; the staff here genuinely know the road.
J Vineyards & Winery
SparklingThe sparkling specialist of the area, on Old Redwood Highway just south of town. J makes serious method-champenoise bubbles, and the Bubble Room is a multi-course bites-and-wine pairing that is one of the more memorable food experiences in the valley. Come for a sparkling flight, or book the Bubble Room well ahead for the full version. The easy answer when someone in the group wants celebration over contemplation.
Westside Road keeps going to Armstrong Redwoods and on toward the coast. A great long version of this day: two Pinot tastings, a picnic, then a drive out to the redwoods or all the way to the ocean for dinner in Bodega Bay.
