Alexander Valley
The broad, warm valley east of town, built on Cabernet. Come here for the grand-estate afternoon and Cabs with structure but without the Napa price tag.
Alexander Valley opens up to the east and northeast of Healdsburg, a wider and warmer valley than the other two. The heat suits Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the wines tend to be rich and approachable rather than tannic monsters. It is also where a few of the area's grand estate experiences live, so this is the valley for the splurge afternoon when you want gardens, hilltop views, and a guided food-and-wine pairing.
What to taste
Cabernet Sauvignon is the headline, often softer and more drinkable young than Napa's, with good Merlot and Bordeaux blends alongside. If you like Cab but find Napa's versions too big and too expensive, this is your valley.
Wineries we send people to
Jordan Vineyard & Winery
The grand splurgeThe full grand-estate afternoon: a chateau, gardens, lakes, and a hilltop vista point, with a food-and-wine pairing built around their Cabernet and Chardonnay. There is a longer estate tour and a shorter winery tasting; either is a genuine experience rather than a quick pour. The most polished hospitality in the area. Reserve well ahead.
Silver Oak (Alexander Valley)
Cabernet, simplyA large, polished, modern winery devoted to one thing: Alexander Valley Cabernet. If you want to taste serious Cab in a comfortable setting without a three-hour commitment, this is the direct route. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Hawkes
Cab without the driveA family Cabernet producer with an estate out in the valley and a tasting room right on the Healdsburg plaza, so you can preview the Cab downtown and decide whether to make the trip out. Unfussy and focused on the wine.
Francis Ford Coppola Winery
Families & a poolTechnically just up the road in Geyserville, this is the crowd-pleaser: a resort-style winery with a swimming pool you can reserve a cabana at, a movie-memorabilia museum, and a full restaurant. Nobody comes for the most serious wine in the valley; they come because it is genuinely fun, especially with kids or a big group on a hot day.
Heading into Alexander Valley, the Jimtown Store on Alexander Valley Road is the classic provisions stop: sandwiches, snacks, and oddball gifts in a restored old country store. Grab lunch there and picnic between tastings.
